I too sing America,
A captivating anthem to those who had to struggle
To be included in the colors of the red white and blue, trying to pursue a life without color
Excused from society but still we sing our song
I too sing america
Yes you see my brown skin but the history runs through the course of my veins, no longer ashamed as they pulled on her long curly reddish hair
A mutt they would call her as she received the hatred stare
This isnt fair i bet my grandma use to think
Be proud to be puerto rican my great grandpa would speak
Burning crosses in front of their house in Alabama
Their brown and white skin mixed to create a family of mixed and confused children and generations to come
but still i too sing America
A generation later we do ourselves a favor
Marry our own race a slave type behavior
To not be ashamed of the dark skin lying on the pavement
Telling the black sons to be men of God
Telling the women to get a job
Generations of blessings and cursings
Failure of self acceptance or self worth
Looking in the mirror and trying not to feel rejected
Although they may not hear our cancion
Although they may hate our brown, red, black or white faces
Although they try to segregate us into separate races
Although they cannot categorize our faces
I too sing America
powerful – a joy to read
